Chapters 23-27 : Family Discussion

South African farm attacks

Research

Summary: The South African farming community has suffered from attacks for many years now. Farmers are thinking that these attacks are evidence of a campaign to drive them off their own land.

Evaluation: This text connects specifically to chapter 24. In chapter 24, the Farmers' Association plans to start a riot to have the camp shut down. As in the text, there's a campaign that's trying to start attacks to drive people and farmers out their own land.

Philosophical Questioning

  1. If you wanted something, would you use violence to achieve it?
  2. In life, we endure hardships what do you do to overcome it?
  3. Is attacking someone to protect your own needs a good reason to attack someone?

Reflection:

The most memorable moment I had with my little sister was when I asked her question #1. We had about a good 5 minute talk, while she was very shakey on the question and saying it depends on what that something is and if its worth the risk. Such as a family member or just money. Something that was surprising was when i asked question #3 and i expected her to bail out of the question. But instead right after she heard the question she answered with confidence, yes. A way i could improve my questions is by asking less "you" questions and more related to society.
